Problems With A New House

As you may or may not be aware, I am heading into my junior year of university in the fall. For the past two years I have been living in the dormitories on my campus. (If you are interested in a blog post about my dorm living experience, click HERE.) Since I wasn't happy in the dorms, I bought a house to live in with my brother (who will be entering his first year of uni in the fall) and eventually another roommate to fill the spare bedroom.

We have been at our new house for a little over two weeks now. I like to think of this as my first official home where I live on my own (plus my brother). Of course my dorm was home when I lived in it, but that was only a seasonal, temporary home. (Click HERE if you'd like to see a video I made on the topic of home.) My house now is a permanent one that I will be living in for at least my last two years of university.

As for the house itself, to some people it may seem small, but it's the perfect size for me. We like to keep the place looking quite simple yet homey. Unfortunately, since we bought the place so cheaply, we have slowly been finding some of it's faults.

For starters, the roof leaks. There are two spots in our ceiling that dip a bit lower than the others due to water collecting above it. Probably the worst problem though is that it leaks in my bedroom doorway. I have double doors into my bedroom and along the whole top of the frame is always covered with drops of water. I've resorted to keeping four different buckets in my doorway at all times to catch the water until we can get the roof fixed for good.

Another major problem has been our dryer. The place came with its own washer and dryer which worked just fine at first. However, by the second load of laundry the dryer stopped working all together and we have resorted to buying a new one.

Other than those two problems, everything else has seemed minor. For instance, one day we were out of water for about four hours (but the whole neighborhood was out as well). The whole house, particularly the bathroom, is covered in spiders. I swear I kill a new spider nearly every time I walk in there. I'm convinced there is a colony of them behind our sink counter.

Also, our dishwasher seems to lack the concept of keeping the water inside the machine and not in a puddle on the floor. Though my brother and I both prefer washing dishes by hand anyway. The final problem we've faced is that whenever you cook you MUST have the oven fan on or else the smoke alarm will go off (which is located on the other side of the house), regardless of there being smoke/steam or not. I have a theory that it may be from all the spices we use while cooking.

Overall, it really is a nice place to live. We have been getting adjusted nicely; just in time for all the hot weather and constant thunderstorms. Now the only thing really left to do is find a summer job! Student loans won't pay themselves! (If only...)

Nothing special, but still meaningful.

Much love,
Elly

A Weekend at Keuka Lake

The other week, I was packed into a car with my two best friends and drove three hours to Keuka Lake in New York! My friend, Sabrina, has a cabin there and the whole plan of the weekend was to have one last long weekend together before we went our separate ways once again due to work and schooling.

The weekend started off on a high note. After the drive, we were straight out onto Keuka Lake for a boat ride.

We were probably on it a little over an hour, but it was so relaxing, even at high speeds. It is incredible how freeing it is to be in the middle of a lake, just watching cabins and rolling hills go by. Not to mention the more than occasional water splashing up in your face! At one point, Kate and I were completely soaked head to toe, but quickly dried off from all the wind.

The majority of the weekend in our little cabin hideaway was spend playing lots of Harry Potter Scene-It and Dominoes as well as reading and watching the FIFA Women's World Cup and American Pharoah win the triple crown.

However, the highlight and the reason we went all the way up to New York in the first place was to see an Ed Sheeran concert in Canandaigua.

The drive to the concert was only a little over a half hour long and was filled with singing along to his albums + and x. When we actually arrived at the semi outdoor arena we were pretty happy with our seats. We were in the far left corner in the last row of seats before you got to the people sitting in the lawn.

Rixton opened for Ed Sheeran. I was the only one of my friends familiar with the band. Nonetheless, we stood up, danced, and sang the best we could during their set even though no one in our section was standing (only about 10% of the whole arena was standing). Surprisingly, since me and my friends were some of the few people standing, the lead singer, Jake, actually gave us a shout out for actually enjoying their set and being the only people towards the back standing.

Finally, it came time for Ed Sheeran. By that time, we realized how awful our seats actually were. Sure, we got the breeze from outside and we weren't stuck in a mess of sweaty fans, but our section was lacking excitement or passion for the music Ed was playing. However, a song or two in and we completely tuned out everyone else and adjusted ourselves so that we could at least see the tiny Ed on stage. By the end, all three of us had sore throats and were left in awe of Ed's performance.

Overall, I wouldn't say it was the best concert I have ever been to based off our location and overall vibe, but I will say that Ed was one of the best performers I have ever seen. He had an unbelievable control over the audience and it was incredible to see everyone respond to his commands whether they were singing, holding up a light, or bouncing their arms when the beat drops in Bloodstream.

On the drive home the next day, we stopped off at an observatory located on the Pennsylvania border. After just experiencing the craziness of a concert the night before, it was wonderful to just look out at the peace of nature for a change.

I was sad to see such a fun and relaxing extended weekend come to an end. It makes you realize that it isn't always about what you do or where you are, but it's the people that make the experience memorable. If I could go back in time and relive that peaceful weekend by the lake I would do it in a heartbeat! It was full of laughs, music, friends, and just plan fun.

Nothing special, but still meaningful.

Elly
